Otavi murder suspect allegedly kills himself during police confrontation

The man wanted in connection with the murder of 16-year-old girl Myne Hoases near Otavi allegedly shot himself after opening fire on police officers during a confrontation at a farm last Friday.Otjozondjupa police spokesperson Senior Inspector Maureen Mbeha said the suspect, 26-year-old Chris Guxab, who had been on the run since 7 August, was traced to a hiding place near a dam during a week-long search.The area was placed under surveillance by police.Mbeha said the suspect returned to the area at about 21:00 and noticed the officers. He allegedly opened fire in their direction before turning the firearm on himself.“He shot himself in the forehead,” Mbeha said.The suspect’s body was transported to the Otjiwarongo police mortuary.The teenager's body was found at the farm on 8 August, a day after she was allegedly raped and killed.Police had been searching for the suspect since then, with the investigation leading officers to the area where he was eventually found.The firearm involved in Friday night’s incident is believed to be the same firearm linked to the murder investigation.The latest development effectively ends the police search for the suspect, but investigations into the case remain ongoing.phillipus@nmh-hub.com.na
