Oshikoto police seize illicit goods
Police in the Oshikoto Region are hard at work to root out illicit products.
Last week, police in Tsumeb confiscated illicit goods worth N$173 600 from a house in the Soweto township. The intercepted products included alcohol and boxes of cigarettes.
Oshikoto police commander, commissioner Armas Shivute, said a case of being in possession of illicit goods has been opened.
He said their concern is that the prohibited products are mostly being transported in trucks, public or private transport and vehicles belonging to courier companies.
Police received a tip-off from a community member that a blue Toyota ‘Dankie Botswana’ sedan was offloading illegal whisky in Soweto, he said.
"Upon the arrival of the members of the police, they spotted the vehicle in the yard with open boot."
Smuggled from Angola
Shivute said police confiscated 13 boxes of Best whisky, containing 72 packs each, and 16 boxes of Yes cigarettes, containing 5 000 cigarettes each, smuggled into the country from Angola.
He added that all the confiscated goods are being kept at the police station.
A 28-year-old suspect has been arrested and is expected to appear in court this week, he added. The police commander urged the community to inform police if they spot any illegal activities.
