Newborn found dead in basin

A 25-year-old woman allegedly abandoned her newborn baby boy in a basin at Okamwiyu village in the Oshikoto Region’s Olukonda constituency on Saturday.
Oshikoto regional commander, Commissioner Theopoline Kalompo-Nashikaku, said the baby was discovered dead at around 23:00, and a case of concealment of birth is being investigated.
She said the suspect gave birth and placed the baby in a green basin to allegedly hide him.
The woman has not been arrested yet, and is currently receiving medical attention at Onandjokwe hospital.
Meanwhile, police in the Omusati Region have opened a case against another 25-year-old woman from Uukwanangaa village in the Onesi constituency for allegedly abandoning her seven-month-old baby girl.
Crime investigations coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Moses Simaho, said it is alleged that the suspect neglected her daughter and failed to breastfeed the baby.
The suspect is due to appear in the Outapi Magistrate’s Court this week. Police investigations into the matter continue.
