N$7.4m drug bust at Ariamsvlei Border Post
Three young Namibians die by suicide
Namibian police recorded a series of serious crimes over the weekend, including a N$7.4 million drug seizure, an attempted diamond theft, violent robberies, domestic murder and stock theft, between 14 and 16 November. In addition, three suicides were reported, with the victims aged 30 and younger.
In Oranjemund, a 46-year-old contractor employee was arrested after an X-ray at a Namdeb checkpoint detected an anomaly that led to the discovery of an unpolished diamond, which was retrieved by a doctor.
At Ariamsvlei Border Post, officers arrested a 40-year-old Namibian man and a 60-year-old Angolan passenger. Police allegedly found 597 mandrax tablets and 14.7 kilograms of cocaine hidden inside a Toyota Corolla Quest travelling from South Africa. The drugs are estimated to be worth N$7.4 million.
Windhoek police dealt with several major incidents, including an armed robbery and vehicle theft at the Cimbebasia dumping site. A 41-year-old man was reportedly held at gunpoint by four suspects, who stole his Huawei P40, withdrew N$4 000 from his e-wallet, and drove off with his Toyota Fortuner GD6, bringing the total loss to an estimated N$800 000.
In Katutura, officers opened a murder investigation after Maggie Xoagus, 47, was allegedly fatally assaulted by her boyfriend during an argument in the Goreangab area.
Drugs and theft
The suspect later handed himself over and was arrested.
Two separate thefts out of motor vehicles were also recorded in Klein Windhoek, where laptops worth N$15 000 and N$30 000 were stolen.
In Oshakati, a 28-year-old resident reported that his silver Toyota Corolla, valued at N$45 000, was stolen from the Pehangano flats area in Evululuko. The vehicle has not been recovered, and no arrests have been made, police said.
Drug-related arrests were made in Rehoboth, Swakopmund’s DRC, Walvis Bay, Maltahöhe and Aroab, where suspects were found in possession of cannabis and mandrax in quantities ranging from 5 grams to 1.2 kilogrammes.
Stock theft incidents were recorded in Oshakati, Oshivelo and Onethindi, with donkeys and cattle recovered in some of the cases.
Tragic losses, violent attacks
Three suicides were reported during the same period, in Windhoek’s Okahandja Park, Tsumeb’s Saamstaan and Oshifo settlement, involving victims aged between 21 and 30. Suicide notes were recovered in two of the cases.
Police also reported the drowning of an eight-year-old girl in a NamWater canal at Etunda village, the assault of a police officer at Fransfontein Police Station, a culpable homicide at Groot Aub after a pedestrian was struck by a tow-in vehicle, and a rape case in Usakos in which a 30-year-old woman was attacked while asleep.
