Multiple drug busts, rapes reported across Namibia
Namibia experienced a series of crimes and tragic incidents over the past weekend, with police reporting multiple cases of armed robbery, drug-related offences, suicides and violent assaults across various towns.
A violent robbery occurred in the industrial area of Otjiwarongo on 31 January between 03:00 and 04:00. Five unknown suspects broke into a house, tied up an elderly couple, and stole frozen sheep carcasses, cellphones as well as a safe that reportedly contained firearms and N$10 000 in cash.
The criminals used the victims’ vehicle as a getaway car, which was later found abandoned. The couple suffered minor injuries, and no arrests have been made yet as investigations continue.
In Oshakati, police are investigating a report of a rape of a 35-year-old woman who was attacked by an as-yet unidentified man. The suspect remains at large.
A 26-year-old man in Okakarara was arrested for allegedly raping a 45-year-old woman after escorting her from a social gathering in the Okarui Village.
In addition, a tragic fire over the weekend in the Goas informal settlement claimed the life of 52-year-old Hendrick Gawiseb and destroyed his home.
The cause of the fire remains unknown. In another case being investigated by the police, a one-year-old child, Haingura Daniel Kaimbi, reportedly drowned in a dam near his home in Kapenene Village.
