Men arrested after jailbreak
Two inmates, Ralph Uiseb (20) and Michael Goeieman (31), are back behind bars after escaping from the Swakopmund Police Station holding cells through a window on Friday.
Uiseb was behind bars on charges of rape, and Goeieman was detained for theft.
"It is alleged that the suspects removed the window of the kitchen in the cells' corridor in an unknown manner and escaped through the window at the gate to the backyard, jumped over the wall and disappeared.
The Erongo police confirmed yesterday that the duo had been rearrested and that a case of escaping from lawful custody had been opened against them.
Violent robbery
The police reported that a 62-year-old Russian national, who was serving a 35-year sentence for multiple counts of rape and human trafficking at the Windhoek Correctional Facility, died by suicide on Friday.
No suicide note had been left by the time of reporting. No foul play is suspected. The next of kin are not yet informed, police said on Monday.
The police also reported that a 77-year-old Namibian male was robbed violently at the Aucor dumping site in Prosperita over the weekend.
"It's alleged that unknown suspects used a panga, assaulted the complainant, and forcefully took property without consent," the police said.
The robbers stole a pistol, four rings, two cell phones, and N$30 000 in cash. There has been no recovery or arrest as of yet.
Fatal accident
On Sunday, in Tsumeb, a 29-year-old man died after a 30-year-old man allegedly drove over him, resulting in multiple fractures all over his body.
"It's alleged that the deceased was lying on the road, and the driver of a white sedan Ford Figo noticed it at close range but drove over the body while travelling from Tsumeb to Grootfontein with two passengers," the police reported.
An unidentified man was arrested and appeared before the Tsumeb Magistrate Court on Monday. He was charged with one count of culpable homicide and one count of drunk and driving.
Food theft
On Friday, a 25-year-old Namibian woman was arrested on charges of theft after she allegedly stole goods worth N$59 900 from Asser Shop, Kakuro village, Kavango West region.
"It's alleged that the suspect took 62 bags of 10 kg of maize meal, six bags of 20 kg of maize meal, and 19 bags of 50 kg of maize meal valued at N$59 900. The suspect could not account for all the items. Nothing has been recovered yet. The suspect was arrested," the police said.
In Otjiwarongo, a 37-year-old male was arrested this past weekend in possession of 30 mandrax tablets and 1 879 grams of cannabis valued at N$ 97 550.The suspect was arrested and appeared in Otjiwarongo Magistrate's Court on Monday.
Meanwhile, Khorixas police are investigating a case of rape of a 22-year-old woman.
"It's alleged that the victim was raped after she went in the bush to help herself when an unknown man came from behind, grabbed her, and had sexual intercourse with her without her consent. No arrests have been made,” the police reported.
