Kaisosi residents threaten mob justice

Kenya Kambowe
Following the death of 20-year-old Baubiruus Ferro Tavares, whose body was found floating in the Kavango River on 21 March, the community of Kaisosi is threatening to take the law into their own hands.

The community, who handed over a petition on Friday to Kavango East governor Bonifatius Wakudumo, said they want the suspected culprits to be arrested and their homes removed from the community or else they will "put the culprits down".

They alleged that relatives of Tavares were responsible for his death.

It is further alleged that Tavares was killed for ritual purposes.

“The Kaisosi community was shocked by the brutal murder of Baubiruus Ferro Tavares,” the petition reads.

According to the petition, there have been about 11 "mysterious" deaths at Kaisosi.

The group also questioned why suspects in the murder of Tavares were detained and then released.

“Our pain and disappointment is that although the culprits were taken to prison, they only spent a fortnight in the cell and were released.

"The person we are talking about was poured with acid after being killed, this resulted in the body dissolving. Why should the same institution that is supposed to protect our rights neglect us? Are the dead no longer in protecting their dignity?” the protestors asked.

The community demanded that the Kaisosi police substation be empowered to investigate this case.

Threats

“Failure to fulfil the above-mentioned demands, we are going to take the law into our own hands. The youth are organised to put the culprits down. These demands are only given a time frame of seven working days. If nothing happens in the seven days, we shall act as stipulated above,” the petition reads.

Wakudumo informed the group that he appreciated the manner in which they demonstrated in a peaceful manner and promised to respond within seven days.

He told the group that they have to remain calm and conduct themselves in accordance with the law, saying that two wrongs is not a solution.
