‘I can’t go to jail over Ndevashiya’

Tuyeimo Haidula
A leaked telephone conversation between Laurence Kapule Ndaoya and a relative has gone viral. Ndaoya killed his girlfriend Eva-Leena Kalimbo at Eenhana in early October over alleged DNA results which showed that he was, in fact, not the father of their children, and that she reportedly had an affair with Ohangwena governor Walde Ndevashiya. Here is the transcribed full conversation, which Ndaoya insisted must be recorded as he planned to take his own life soon after. However, he was killed by the police during his arrest.

The call, made just moments after Kalimbo was killed, was with Denis Valombola. The conversation has been edited for clarity, but remains largely verbatim.

“Let me tell you, that girl [Kalimbo] and I have a seven-year-old child, Sharon, and I am not the biological father of the child. How much money did I give to Leena? She stayed in Windhoek, I have been paying for her studies at a school whose name I don’t remember well.

“While she was Windhoek, she was busy having sexual relations with [Walde] Ndevashiya. Whilst doing so, she had also been aborting multiple pregnancies funded by the governor.

“During the Covid-19 pandemic, that girl informed me she was looking for me. So one day, I went to Mr Valombola’s residence [village home where Leena lived], and I asked where Leena was. I was told she had stepped out to buy cool drink. I spent the whole day [there]. I visit your house a lot and I don’t eat there.

“One day, Meme Elina [from the same house as Leena] cooked and she said ‘Kapule, eat. This food was prepared by your girlfriend’. From that day on during the Covid-19 era, we came to your house to have drinks and relax there.

"So one day, my girlfriend [Leena] told me that she was pregnant. That day we were going to a wedding at Omuloka village. I told her to come so we go [to the wedding] together, but she didn’t come - saying she didn’t want to get into the same car as Kanu, so I let her be.

“The day I went to the wedding, I asked Nelao where Leena was. As you know, Nelao is talkative so she told me that Leena [refused to come with us because she] had other plans with the governor, that’s why she refused to get in the car. I said okay because my initial thought was that she travelled with Masilela because when the other girl from Tate Nakamwe’s residence died, Leena was in [a relationship] with Masilela at the time.

“I asked her about it and she said she was sorry. That night I called Masilela and asked him if he had driven with Leena, and he said he no longer engages in any relations with Leena and therefore had no reason to go with her. She had gone with the governor.

“That day I slept in your house [where Leena lives] and when I woke up in the morning around 10:00, Tate Valombola came to the sleeping rooms and called out the girls’ names, and so I responded. Tate Valombola noticed that something was not right and went away for me to continue my sleep. Later, Leena came to the room in a towel – pretending to be coming from Meme Elina’s room after she was dropped off at home in the morning by the governor. I then asked Sharon who drove her mom back home. She replied that her mother was dropped off by a big seven-seater car that is owned by a man who wears spectacles, the same man who usually picks her up. That was the reply of my seven-year-old daughter.”

Are you sure?

“One day, I took my daughter and Nelao told me that we, men, like taking kids we didn’t father, saying what will I tell the family if something happens to the kid while she is in my care? I didn’t react to her.

“Another day, Louise asked me if I was sure that I’m really Sharon’s father. She said the kids are ugly and thus can’t be mine. I just listened and kept my cool all the time.

“Leena is always insulting me. She was being manipulated by Meme Naulumba, she is the one who convinced Leena to sleep with men for money when Leena was taking care of Meme Naulumba’s child in Windhoek. She is the one who introduced her to that life. When Leena was sleeping with different men for money, Meme Naulumba would call her, requesting her to send her some funds. That’s how everything has been developing.

“So, Leena was telling me that she's pregnant and a lot of other personal things. I then requested her to tell me who the father of the baby is, and she claimed I'm the father. I then said to her that she has been having an affair with the governor, and she said she and the governor do not sleep together any more. She then told me that I should help her move from Windhoek. I drove to Windhoek [to pick her up] and we left for Rundu.

“In Rundu, we stayed at Shikongo’s place, and Shikongo asked me if Leena was my girlfriend. I said ‘yes, we are together’. I called Julie, a workmate of the governor. I told Julie to tell the governor that what he is doing is not right. I also called Tate Kakololo, [the governor's uncle], whom I told that the governor is doing wrong things. Kakololo made it clear that he would talk to the governor. "So, during Leena’s pregnancy, she had been in communication with the governor; he constantly asked if I am around. I asked Leena what [she was really] trying to accomplish by continuing the relationship with the governor. ‘We are together and yet you are allowing the governor to call you freely behind my back?’

“Then the child was born, [and] Leena would tell the governor that Gloria [newborn baby] did not have food. She would tell the governor that she and the baby are getting cold, but the blankets she used were the very same blankets I slept in.”

Three abortions

“Currently as I speak, Ndevashiya has been responsible for Leena’s three abortions. Whenever I travel to Windhoek, Leena and I meet up for sex, but her and I don’t use protection, and she keeps telling me that she is pregnant. I then always ask her ‘what is the way forward?’ since she is still in school.

"She said it doesn’t matter and that the pregnancy is not going to change much and that school will not be hindered, so I said okay, you can keep the child.

“Two months [later], she came back to me and told me that she lost the baby, miscarriage. She told Ndevashiya the same thing and she threatened him that the pregnancy must be terminated or she will tell his wife, so I decided to tell Ndevashiya’s wife.

“She insulted Leena with some vulgar words. I then went on to tell Ndevashiya’s mother, [and] she said that she doesn’t involve herself much in Ndevashiya’s business [as] ‘Ndevashiya is a man and men are dogs'. Ndevashiya’s wife is in Ongwediva just eating her son’s money."

DNA test

“So, from the other wedding I mentioned earlier, we went for a DNA test, and we finished all proceedings. On that day of the [test], Meme Elina came to [our] place with herbs and a plastic bag containing a panty liner with blood on it and a feather that belonged to a chicken and another feather of a bird well-known as makaya in Oshiwambo. Those items were then placed in the fridge by Meme Elina. Upon seeing those things in the fridge, I took pictures of them.

“Nelao told me that I am unable to do anything about the whole situation as the family Leena belonged to had used ritual spells on me. I kept questioning Leena about the whole situation and she kept saying that the children belonged to me and that the DNA test was wrong.

“There is a girl in Oshikango, her name is Natalia and that girl is the one with the keys to my room. You will find keys in my pants pockets. I am going to hang myself now. I have money in my pockets amounting to about N$5 000. If you go in my room, you will find a jackpot machine; [its] keys are on the keys with Natalia or the ones you’ll find in my pockets.

"There will be books there and certificates and documents. If you pick up those books, you will find a brown envelope. Inside it will be the DNA test results.

“The original document of the DNA results is with Dr Ora in Eenhana; my file number is 1594. I left Leena at home after having killed her. The reason I killed Leena is because of Ndevashiya.

“During the funeral preparations and proceedings, you must inform the people that Ndevashiya is the one who caused all of this. He cannot be sleeping with someone in Windhoek and then I decide to move her from Windhoek to Eenhana and he still comes to pick her up from my house at night; a house that I pay for, a house where my kids live. And he still has the guts to come and get her so he [can] sleep with her.

“The time Leena decided to stop breastfeeding prematurely was with the intention of starting to sleep with the governor again or [because the] governor told her to stop breastfeeding because he wanted the relations to continue.”

‘People must know’

“Right now, I am in Oshikunde. I am waiting for Sacky ‘Top Life’ to arrive from Angola. I am waiting for him to come give me a car. You will find my corpse close to Ndevashiya’s household in Onakalunga. I will not commit suicide in the forest where people will not find me like a coward; I will do it where I will be visible to people.

“People must know that all these things are caused by Ndevashiya. When Ndevashiya went to China, he gave Leena N$5 000. He is in China as I speak right now. Apparently he will travel back in the coming weeks. I sent Ndevashiya’s wife an SMS the day before yesterday and I told her that I have a parcel for her husband when he comes back from China. The parcel is Leena’s lifeless body. He must buy a coffin.

“Meme Elina put herbs in my fridge so that I marry Leena, and so that they can control me and my life. After I killed Leena, I found Meme Elina wandering in the dark, headed to the house. I took her phone and slapped her in her face.

“Tell Natalia to call me before I kill myself. She knows the story of the negative DNA result."

[Here, Valombola asked whether suicide is the only option.]

“Suicide is the only option I have now. I have no other choice; I cannot go to jail in the name of Ndevashiya.

“The reason why Leena was killed today is because she came home after I was dropped off by Inspector Angula, your in-law. She took a wooden stick and attempted to hit me, saying she won’t let me enter the house.

“I was very angry so I took the stick from her and I hit her. I noticed she was badly injured so I decided to just end her life. I had already been planning to kill her for quite some time; I was just waiting for Ndevashiya to return so I could kill her while he was around.”

Ndevashiya, who has previously denied any connection to the matter, did not reply to Namibian Sun’s request for comment.
