Girlfriend murder accused denied bail

Murder accused Geoffrey Jeff Kasume has been denied bail after the court found that his release could prejudice the administration of justice.He stands accused of strangling his girlfriend, Regina Kondombolo (33), to death at her home in Otjomuise Extension 2 in Windhoek on 7 February this year.Kasume faces a second charge of defeating the course of justice after allegedly tampering with Kondombolo’s body by wiping the blood from her mouth.Kasume appeared at the Windhoek Magistrate's Court in Katutura for a bail ruling on 24 August, where magistrate Auguste Simon declined to release him on bail.Kasume, a Namibian citizen who was born in Kenya, was arrested after police investigations identified him as the primary suspect in Kondombolo’s murder.The State opposed Kasume’s bail application on the grounds that he might abscond, interfere with state witnesses and the investigation, and that the offence was serious.Toxic relationshipPolice Detective Joseph Sakaria testified in support of the State’s grounds of objection.“Kasume and Kondombolo’s relationship was characterised by allegations of domestic violence prior to her death,” he told the court.The court also heard that the police had previously received complaints alleging domestic violence in the relationship, although the allegations had not been substantiated.“On the night in question, the deceased went out with her cousin. They were subsequently conveyed in the deceased’s motor vehicle by a third person. The cousin was dropped off and the deceased was thereafter taken to her residence,” Sakaria testified.Investigators allege that Kasume later went to Kondombolo’s residence, where a physical altercation took place during which she was allegedly strangled and died.“The accused subsequently locked the deceased inside the residence,” the court heard.“Several days later, concerns arose when the deceased could not be contacted. Her motor vehicle was observed at the residence and, after the door was forced open, the deceased’s body was discovered inside the house,” Sakaria testified.Her body was discovered lying in a pool of blood on Monday, 9 February.Father and business ownerKasume has disputed the police’s version of events and said he did not see or hear from Kondombolo before discovering her remains. He also denied that their relationship was marked by domestic violence.During his bail hearing, Kasume said he is self-employed and owns a company, Sky West CC, which has been non-operational since his imprisonment.“I am a father of four,” he testified. “I want to be granted bail so as to keep up my company as well as to support my family members who are financially dependent on me.”He told the court that he would not abscond from trial because his children and family members were based in Namibia. He also said he intended to plead not guilty to the charges.Magistrate Simon found that he had not proved, on a balance of probabilities, that he was a suitable candidate for bail.The case will return to court on 11 November for the prosecutor general's decision.The State was represented by Rowan van Wyk.rita@nmh-hub.com.na
