Father who raped one-year-old son denied bail

Tuyeimo Haidula
The man who sent shock waves across the Ohangwena Region for allegedly raping his 19-month-old son was denied bail at the Okongo Magistrate’s Court yesterday and has been remanded in custody.

Ohangwena police detective, chief inspector Victor Haludilu, who is currently acting regional crime coordinator, said although the suspect initially ran away, he was arrested after a public tip-off.

The 24-year-old man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the toddler, appeared on two counts of rape. The State objected bail. His case has been postponed to 29 September for formal bail application and further police investigations.

Haludilu said the suspect went to seek shelter at a residence in a village close to where the incident took place. “Those people informed the police and that is how he was arrested,” he said.

Horrific crime

The horrific crime reportedly took place at Epangwe village in Ohangwena during March and on the night of 12 April.

A police report shows that the man was left alone with his son in March when the toddler’s mother went to Okongo. He then allegedly raped the boy.

When the mother returned the same day, she noticed that the baby was not sitting or walking properly, after which she inspected the child’s private parts and saw bruises, but did not suspect sexual assault.

On the evening of Tuesday, 12 April, the mother, the suspect and the toddler slept in the same room.

The mother was awoken by her son’s cries in the middle of the night, only to allegedly find the suspect raping the toddler.
