Father accused of murder-for-insurance plot to stand trial
The criminal case against a 53-year-old man accused of orchestrating a failed murder-for-insurance plot targeting his son is set to resume in the Katutura Regional Court in June and July for plea and trial proceedings.
Court documents indicate that former Old Mutual financial advisor George Kashava was granted bail of N$2 000 in November last year after police indicated investigations had been completed and that there were no longer concerns that he would interfere with investigations.
The matter returned to court before magistrate Victor Nyazo earlier this year.
Kashava stands accused of allegedly hiring men to kill his son, Willem Kashava, in an alleged scheme linked to a potential insurance payout of up to N$2 million.
Failed plan
Namibian Sun previously reported that police foiled the alleged murder plot in October 2023 after the men who had allegedly been hired to carry out the assassination informed the police.
At the time, reliable police sources further indicated to Namibian Sun that George allegedly monitored his son’s movements and provided information on his whereabouts to the would-be killers, who were by then cooperating with police. Willem, who was reportedly unaware of the alleged plot against him, was subsequently placed under police protection.
Police then reportedly staged a fake murder scene and presented photographs to the accused as proof that the killing had been carried out.
Kashava allegedly indicated that payment to the hired men would be made once an insurance payout had been processed. Days later, he reportedly directed police to the staged crime scene after claiming he had received information about the discovery of a body resembling his son.
He was arrested at the scene and later charged with conspiracy to commit a crime, attempted murder, fraud and defeating or obstructing the course of justice.
