Police in the Oshana Region yesterday swiftly arrested Simon Kandume, an ex-soldier from Ohenghono village, who went into hiding after he allegedly killed his girlfriend and their two-year-old daughter.

Kandume, who was involved in the shooting of two people with a service weapon at Rundu some years ago while working for the Namibian Defence Force (NDF), allegedly committed the double murder during the early hours of Sunday at the Okangwena location in Ondangwa.

Oshana police spokesperson inspector Thomas Aiyambo said it is alleged that he stabbed and killed his 37-year-old girlfriend and two-year-old daughter, while his 13-year-old son is reportedly fighting for his life at the Onandjokwe hospital.

His surviving five-year-old daughter – who was unharmed - has been taken in for counselling.

Aiyambo said it is not yet known what happened prior to the fatalities, adding that a knife suspected to have been used in the murders was found at the crime scene.

Suspect arrested in Saron killing

In another femicide case, police on Saturday arrested a suspect in Keetmanshoop in connection with the murder of 28-year-old Charmaine Saron, who was stabbed 24 times and dumped in a riverbed behind the Elcin Hosianna Parish in Windhoek earlier this month.

Saron was a resident of Rehoboth and a prominent youth leader of the Landless People’s Movement.

According to Khomas police commander Ismael Basson, the suspect will make his first appearance in the Keetmanshoop Magistrate’s Court today before being transferred to Windhoek.

He was arrested with the help of tip-offs from the community, the commander said.

Mother-of-four Saron was identified by her sister, who said she left Rehoboth on 8 June to attend assistant nurse classes in Windhoek and was last seen the night before the murder.
