Elderly Swakopmund man beaten and tied up in brutal home robbery
An 83-year-old Swakopmund man was beaten, tied up and robbed in his home by five armed men over the weekend, in what police have described as one of several serious crimes recorded across the country between 21 and 23 November.
According to Namibian Police spokesperson Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi, on Saturday at 11:15, the elderly resident opened his garage door after he heard someone knocking, when five suspects “grabbed and forcefully dragged him upstairs, tied him up with shoelaces and began searching the house for valuables”.
The group allegedly stole a revolver with ammunition, household machinery, jewellery, meat, wine, two televisions and N$1 200 in cash before escaping in a red VW Polo. No arrests have yet been made.
The Swakopmund attack formed part of numerous crimes reported to police, including murders, rape, serious assaults and significant drug seizures.
Violent attacks
In Keetmanshoop, a 33-year-old woman was reportedly raped in Kronlein cemetery in the early hours of Friday before being robbed of a cooldrink and a bottle of Tassenberg wine. Shikwambi confirmed that the 26-year-old male suspect has been arrested.
In Oniipa, at the Okalevona location in Oniipa, a 17-year-old domestic worker was reportedly dragged from her room on Saturday at about 03:00 in the morning and allegedly raped outside by multiple suspects after one of them allegedly attempted to rob her of her mobile phone. By Sunday, no arrests had been reported in the case.
In Kuisebmund, police said a 47-year-old man allegedly broke into a shack in early October and raped a 14-year-old girl while her younger brother slept nearby. The girl has since tested positive for pregnancy. A suspect has been arrested.
On Friday in Oshakati, three girls aged 14, 16 and 19, were reportedly held at knifepoint by two men who falsely claimed their uncle had sent them.
The suspects allegedly threatened the eldest girl with an Okapi knife and stole two televisions and four phones before escaping.
Meanwhile, a deadly confrontation unfolded in Windhoek’s Okahandja Park on Saturday between 02:00 and 03:00, where a taxi driver allegedly shot and killed Innocent Shawn in self-defence after he was attacked by a group of men, including a passenger he had picked up in town.
Shikwambi said the driver was assaulted, his window smashed, and he “drew his pistol and shot the deceased”.
Deadly accidents, drug busts
Meanwhile, several road incidents resulted in loss of life and serious injury. On Friday at 19:00 at Farm Tuvleg in the Outjo district, 27-year-old passenger Benny Haodom died instantly when the driver of a Toyota double-cab overturned while swerving to avoid guinea fowl. Other occupants were transported to Outjo State Hospital.
