Elderly couple attacked in Swakopmund

NEWS IN SHORT

A 70-year-old Swakopmund resident was stabbed and his wife tied up during an armed robbery by four masked men at their house in Swakopmund’s Vogelstrand earlier this week.

According to both the Swakopmund Neighbourhood Watch and the Namibian Police, the attack occurred shortly after 07:00, when the man had gone to the kitchen to make coffee and disarmed the home’s alarm system. He was suddenly confronted by four attackers wielding pangas, knives and a knobkierie.

A neighbourhood watch incident report said the man tried to resist but was overpowered, stabbed in the chest, struck with a knobkierie and tied up with a towel. One of the attackers held a knife to his face and ordered him to lie down and avoid looking at them.

The intruders then moved upstairs, tied up the woman and began ransacking the house for valuables. They then forced access to the garage and fled with the couple’s Toyota Hilux bakkie.

The victim managed to untie himself and raise the alarm. Paramedics responded, and the man was later admitted to Cottage Private Hospital in stable condition.

The vehicle was discovered abandoned in the DRC suburb less than an hour later by a neighbourhood watch patrol.

According to the neighbourhood watch, this is the second reported incident in which a group of four armed assailants targeted elderly residents in Swakopmund in daylight hours.
