Namibia’s weekend was marked by a series of tragic and violent incidents across several regions, including accidental deaths, drug-related arrests, robberies and domestic violence.

In Swakopmund, police opened a case of murder and concealment of birth after the body of a newborn baby was found wrapped in a plastic bag near Swakopmund Secondary School. No arrests have yet been made in this case.

According to a crime report issued by Namibian Police Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi, tragedy struck in Opuwo when 18-year-old Mavejakuani Tjirambi, a disabled teenager, died in a shack fire after being left alone. The blaze also destroyed the family’s home and all its belongings.

Domestic violence and rape incidents also featured prominently in the report.

In Maltahöhe and Aranos, suspects were arrested for assaulting their partners with various weapons, including a wire and a pipe.

The weekend further saw a disturbing case of rape reported to police in Okankolo, where a 32-year-old mute woman filed a case after allegedly being beaten and raped by a 19-year-old learner from Omulunga Combined School. The suspect has been arrested.

Another rape was reported in Otjiwarongo, where a 29-year-old man allegedly assaulted his ex-girlfriend, the mother of his two children, in an abandoned house.

Robberies, drugs

Police in Okahandja are investigating an armed robbery after suspects allegedly tied up a victim and made off with two television sets, a laptop, clothing and car keys – the stolen items were valued at nearly N$38 000.

Police also recorded two separate drownings, one in Osire, where a 23-year-old cattle herder drowned while attempting to cross the Omatako Dam, and another in Kahenge, where a 33-year-old individual drowned when a canoe capsized in the Kavango River.

Meanwhile, the Erongo and Otjozondjupa regions saw multiple drug busts, particularly in Walvis Bay’s Tutaleni and Kuisebmond suburbs, where several suspects, including minors, were arrested for possession of cannabis and mandrax worth thousands of dollars. One Congolese national was also arrested for possession of cocaine valued at N$2 000.

In Kombat, two men aged 36 and 25 were separately arrested for possession of cannabis and mandrax tablets, while in Katutura, a 23-year-old man was caught with nearly one kilogram of cannabis valued at N$46 000.
