Blaauw denied bail in Aranos livestock theft case

Francoise Steynberg
Andre Blaauw (41) from Keetmanshoop was denied bail on Friday in the Aranos Magistrate’s Court in the Hardap Region after appearing on charges of livestock theft.

According to the Namibian Police's crime investigations coordinator in the region, Deputy Commissioner John Mwatongwe, Blaauw was arrested last Wednesday on charges of livestock theft after allegedly stealing 56 cattle and 100 sheep worth N$410 000 from a farm in the Aranos district.

“He was denied bail, but the investigation is still ongoing,” Mwatongwe confirmed to Network Media Hub (NMH) yesterday.

Big case

This follows after the owner of the livestock, Sarel Oberholzer, stated that Blaauw’s arrest was the first step in uncovering the largest livestock theft case in Namibia.

“This is the biggest livestock theft case ever in Namibia. Blaauw stole N$30 million from me and my friends,” Oberholzer alleged.

“They are a bunch of cowboys in Keetmanshoop. Blaauw removed the livestock from my farm, Coen Brits, without permits or my permission. He even put a sticker on his new bakkie that said ‘Too fast to catch.’ Now, he’s caught!”

According to Oberholzer, a fraud case has also been opened against Blaauw and some of his family members, with more information to be provided later this week.

“The Gochas police added another charge of livestock theft to the case on Friday,” Oberholzer added.

Blaauw’s case in the Aranos Magistrate’s Court has been postponed to 26 March.
