Armed robbers flee with N$25 000 in recharge vouchers – police

The Namibian Police recorded a string of serious incidents across the country over the weekend, ranging from alleged rape and armed robbery to fatal car crashes.In Oshakati, four armed suspects allegedly ambushed a delivery man at Rani Mini Market in Uupindi on Friday afternoon.Two of the suspects were armed with guns, police said.They reportedly overwhelmed the man as he was closing his truck’s loading box, fleeing with N$25 254 worth of recharge vouchers and the truck keys.The suspects escaped in a silver Toyota Corolla, police reported. No arrests have been made.Rape, drugs and smugglers In Otjiwarongo, an 18-year-old suspect was arrested after allegedly luring two girls, aged 12 and eight, into his room. He was accused of raping the older child. The younger was able to escape and raised the alarm, the police report noted. In Tsumeb, 51-year-old Wilhem Zackaria was stabbed to death at the Omatala Open Market. A 23-year-old man has been arrested.At Brakwater, suspects broke into a storage facility and stole property worth N$1.5 million, including camping gear, appliances, electronics, a motorbike and a bicycle. No arrests have been made.Drug-related arrests were recorded in Hochfeld, Okamatapati and Khorixas, where suspects were caught with large quantities of skunk valued at over N$50 000 in total. In Okahandja, three men were arrested for possession of a live pangolin valued at N$50 000, police said. The police report noted further that a toddler was killed on the Oshakati-Ongwediva road after running into traffic, and a four-year-old boy drowned while fishing in a pond near Outapi.Police also reported a machete assault in Rundu, a hit-and-run incident in Mariental allegedly involving a drunk driver, and a suspected hippo attack that capsized a canoe in Ndiyona. A 64-year-old woman who was in the canoe remains missing, police said. Shikwambi confirmed that police investigations are underway in all cases. “We commend the public for their cooperation and urge continued vigilance,” she said.
