Alleged killer soldier in police custody
Simon Kandume, the ex-soldier who allegedly killed his girlfriend and daughter at Okangwena settlement in Ondangwa, is now in police custody after being released from the Onandjokwe hospital’s intensive care unit.
Kandume was hospitalised after allegedly ingesting poison moments after stabbing his girlfriend Ruth Immanuel and their two-year-old daughter Lovisa Kandume several times on 19 June.
He appeared in the Ondangwa Magistrate's Court last month. He was remanded in custody until 18 October for further investigations.
According to her sister, Julia Abel (39), Immanuel’s family has expressed regret at not intervening earlier in what they termed an abusive relationship.
Abel was the first to arrive at the gruesome scene.
In an interview with Namibian Sun, she said she still hears her sister’s cries and screams for help. When she eventually left her room to assess the situation, “it was too late”.
A case of double murder and attempted murder has been opened against Kandume. He also attacked their other child, 13-year-old Fanuel Kaushiweni Kandume, who survived the ordeal. He was released from hospital last month.
Abel yesterday said her nephew is recuperating well and religiously goes to his appointments with social workers for counselling, to which she accompanies him.
