Alleged hijacker stabbed to death
‘Robbery gone wrong’
A scuffle over the control of a vehicle ended in the death of a would-be hijacker, police reports said.
In what seems to be a hijacking gone wrong, a man died on Tuesday morning after being stabbed during a scuffle.
He had apparently been trying to hijack the car of a man who gave him a lift to Oshakati’s Onawa location.
According to the police, a case of attempted robbery with aggravating circumstance has been opened.
Oshana Region police spokesperson, Inspector Thomas Aiyambo, said the incident took place at around 01:30 when a 33-year-old man was on his way home and stopped at a service station to buy food.
A suspect approached him, asking for a lift for himself and two other men, he said.
“The driver agreed to take them halfway, to Oneshila. The three men boarded the vehicle, which is a white Nissan bakkie. The one who asked for the hike was in the passenger seat, while the other two climbed on the back of the single cab vehicle,” Aiyambo said.
When the driver tried to stop at Oneshila, the man in the passenger seat threatened him with a knife and ordered him to proceed to Onawa."
The driver obeyed.
“At Onawa, the suspect could not indicate exactly where the driver should stop. So, the driver decided to stop the car. The two at the back shouted that they should take the car. The passenger in front started a scuffle over the steering wheel,” he said.
The scuffle led to the front-seat passenger being stabbed. He died moments later.
The other suspects fled the scene.
According to Aiyambo, the deceased has not yet been identified and his body is being kept at the Oshakati police mortuary.
The driver has been detained for questioning, while police investigations continue.
