ACC seizes Walvis Bay weighbridge in corruption probe

Frieda Molotho
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has seized a weighbridge valued at N$2.3 million from the Roads Authority in Walvis Bay.

The seizure is part of an ongoing investigation into alleged corrupt practices involving a staff member and a supplier.

The ACC issued a press statement saying the investigation centres on a suspicious invoice for the new weighbridge that was never supplied.

The probe also revealed irregularities surrounding the handling of an older weighbridge unit.

The older weighbridge was reportedly refurbished for N$264 960.00 by the same supplier and reinstalled in Walvis Bay in September 2021.

However, upon the supposed delivery of the new scale in May 2022, the original weighbridge was reportedly removed under the pretence that it would be stored at the Windhoek facility.

Instead, it was redirected and installed at Etango Petroleum (Pty) Ltd, where it is now being leased – allegedly illegally – by the supplier, without formal disposal procedures or authorisation from the Roads Authority.

The ACC is pursuing fraud, theft and money laundering charges under the Anti-Corruption Act of 2003.
