Freedom of Movement makes Namibian debut
Grove Mall their new home
Passion for design leads to top lifestyle brand.
Freedom of Movement (FOM) was founded in 2013 by two brothers who had a passion for design and entrepreneurship, as well as a dream to create a proudly South African lifestyle brand.
From the outset, the brothers’ vision was to create a globally recognised lifestyle brand that was founded on the principles of quality, longevity, value and worth. They saw leather as the one raw material that epitomised all four these principles, and as a result it was a natural starting point for them to form the core of this aspiring brand, since leather is known for its robust and timeless appeal, and nothing quite tells a story like a well-worn leather bag!
FOM aspires to inspire everyone to live their lives with freedom of movement; they should have the freedom to explore, the freedom to dream and the freedom to create, says Pieter Steenkamp, a partner of the Namibian franchise.
In 2020, the three Steenkamp siblings approached the brand to look into starting a franchise because they really loved the brand and the products, and they were hoping to bring it to Namibia. “After quite a bit of negotiating, the founders agreed to make us their exclusive suppliers for FOM products. However, everyone knows that to start a business, one of the most important things is start-up capital. So, being as young as we are, we started showcasing the products at the weekly Inspire Market. We did that for about a year and then we finally got some capital together and it was time to expand.”
It wasn’t long thereafter, that FOM opened their outlet at the Grove Mall.
“Each and every product sold in this shop is unique,” says co-partner Ananda Steenkamp.
While there is an option to have etchings done on some of the leather products to personalise your purchase, this needs to be arranged months in advance, Ananda says. She also encourages clients to take good care of their leathers, and for this, there is also a special cleaning range available from the outlet.
Freedom of Movement is located between Cotton On and Mr Price, opposite Total Sports in the Grove Mall.
There are various payment options available, including lay-buy (for three months). If you find yourself in South Africa, feel free to visit one of their 14 branches or simply shop online.
