A new era for Namibia's youth
September 1st saw a momentous occasion unfold in the heart of Katutura as the #BeFree Centre of Excellence officially opened its doors. This multipurpose youth center, once merely an idea, has now developed into a vibrant reality, ushering in a new era for Namibia's youth.
The inauguration drew attention from across the nation and was graced by the presence of high-level government officials and esteemed guests, including the First Ladies of Angola and Sierra Leone. Their participation underscored the significance of this initiative and shed light on the transformative role it is poised to play in the lives of young Namibians.
Conceptualised by the One Economy Foundation, the #BeFree Youth Campus is designed as a comprehensive one-stop center, offering a wide range of services to cater to the diverse needs of Namibia's youth. Beyond being a recreational hub, the campus will provide essential health services, psychosocial support, and a creative space for young minds to flourish.
Monica Geingos, the First Lady and Chairperson of the One Economy Foundation, emphasised that the centre's opening reflects the foundation's commitment to the development and protection of young people. She stated: "Invest in young people! There is an African proverb that says that it's the young trees that make up the forest, and that is true for us. Since the beginning, young people have taken control of One Economy Foundation, particularly the #BeFree movement."
What initially began as an initiative to protect adolescent girls and young women from new HIV infections has rapidly transformed into a movement that empowers young people to break free from the constraints that limit their potential.
#BeFree Ambassador Rivaldo Kavanga expressed the hope that the campus would serve as a blueprint for all agencies working with young people. He said: Located in the heart of Katutura, a community facing a myriad social challenges, the campus is a beacon of hope for both the old and the young. The unconventional yet strategic placement reflects the centre's dedication to making a difference where it is needed most."
The First Ladies of Angola and Sierra Leone commended the initiative, recognising the transformative role it plays in the lives of Namibian youth. The First Lady of Sierra Leone praised the initiative, saying, "What my sister is doing here is transforming the lives of young people; you are actually making young people understand the meaning of being valued in their society."
The #BeFree Youth Campus boasts fully furnished health facilities, study areas, and creative spaces, including a visual and audio studio and game rooms. It even features a soup kitchen, ensuring that essential needs are met. The generous donation of N$1 million by the Capricorn Group further underscores the community's support for this vital endeavor.
The #BeFree Centre of Excellence stands as a testament to the collective efforts of the One Economy Foundation, supported by the Capricorn Foundation, and the Namibian government. Together, they have provided young Namibians with a dynamic platform for growth, creativity, and access to essential services.
