A warm tribute to Ras Sheehama
“If I don’t meet her father, we won’t go to Namibia.” Those were my father\'s words before we embarked on our journey to Namibia for the traditional marriage ceremony.
My beloved, now my wife, took the initiative to arrange a video call between our families, allowing my father to formally seek permission to travel with me to ask for the hand of Ras Sheehama’s daughter in marriage. I vividly remember Ras\'s warm words during that call: “I give your son my blessing to engage my daughter with all my heart.” His genuine expression and heartfelt smile created a moment that deeply moved my father. It was all the assurance he needed to travel with me to Namibia.
On our wedding day, Ras honoured us with a live performance of his iconic song, \'Smile for Me, Namibia\'.
The energy on the dance floor was electric – friends and family alike danced with pure joy. His music truly made the day unforgettable, as he blessed us with more of his timeless songs throughout the celebration.
To my family and many Namibians, Daddy Ras was a precious gem. He lived a simple, contented life and appreciated every moment and everything he had. As a father-in-law, he welcomed me with open arms, treating me like his own son and offering words of encouragement whenever we met.
Some of my fondest memories are of the times he would cook for my wife and me, and we’d sit together sharing stories over a meal. His music, deeply rooted in themes of liberation, unity and equality, resonated with my soul and the hearts of so many others.
Just a few days before his passing, Ras joined us to celebrate my birthday. After the festivities, he pulled me aside and asked if we had moved into our new home. When I confirmed that we had, he smiled warmly and said he would visit us soon. I didn’t know then that it would be our final conversation.
Daddy Ras, although you are no longer with us in the physical, we believe you rest in eternal glory. Your legacy lives on – not only in your music but also in our hearts and in the stories we’ll pass on to our children and grandchildren.
May your soul rest in peace in the bosom of our Lord.
