Locals facing high production costs

The Producer Price Index (PPI) which measures the rate of change in the prices of goods and services bought and sold by local producers indicated an upward trend for most of the products during the fourth quarter of 2021.

The index excludes imports, but includes the prices of goods and services sold domestically and to international markets.

According to the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA), the index for manufacturing of basic precious metals and other non-ferrous metals stood at 247.8 basis points, up from 163.4 basis points recorded in the same quarter of the previous year.

This category includes the production of basic precious metals such as gold, silver, platinum from ore and scrap excluding extraction of ores, which is covered under the index of mining of other non-ferrous metals. It also covers the production and semi-manufacturing of lead, zinc and tin or their alloys from ores and scrap.

The index for other mining and quarrying category, which includes the mining and extraction of diamonds, increased to 124.6 basis points compared to 103.5 basis points recorded during the same quarter a year earlier, NSA said.

In addition, the index of processing and preserving of meat increased by 2.5 basis points from 177.9 basis points recorded in the same quarter of 2021 to 180.4 basis points.

This sector includes the operation of slaughterhouses including slaughtering, dressing, packing of meat and the production of fresh, chilled or frozen meat. It also includes the production of dried, salted or smoked meat and other meat products for example, sausages, salami, pâtés, and boiled ham.

Moreover, the index for the manufacturing of malt liquors and malt increased to 131.2 basis points in the fourth quarter of 2021, 6.5 basis points up from 124.7 basis points recorded in the corresponding quarter of 2020. On annual basis, the inflation rate for manufacturing of malt liquors and malt was recorded at 5.2 percent, a growth of 1.1 percentage points when compared to 4.1% registered in the fourth quarter of 2020, the agency added.

Furthermore, the index for the manufacturing of soft drinks, production of mineral waters and other bottled waters stood at 118.6 basis points compared to 113.6 basis points registered in the fourth quarter of 2020.

The index for the manufacturing of cement, lime and plaster stood at 100.6 basis points in the fourth quarter of 2021 compared to 98.1 basis points in the same quarter of 2020.

Lastly, the index for electric power generation, transmission and distribution increased to 111.0 basis points from 106.9 basis points registered in the same quarter of 2020, NSA [email protected]
