For Indongo David (35), collecting grass has evolved from a mere survival tactic into a profitable enterprise.Since 2021, the dedicated entrepreneur has built his business, Niilotse Investment, into an operation that generates up to N$100 000 a month.David travels from town to town in search of areas rich in grass, which he carefully harvests and sells to farmers throughout the country.David told Namibian Sun his venture was inspired by the 2021 drought which devastated many farmers’ livestock.While some regions boasted ample grass, grazing was not an option for animals in other, drought-stricken areas. "I saw an opportunity to collect the grass and sell it to farmers in need," he said.He emphasised his commitment to ethical practices, indicating that he never cuts grass without the necessary permission.“We always consult the local town councils first, and they have all been supportive, recognising that our efforts also help maintain cleanliness in the areas."David's enterprise has faced its share of challenges, particularly at the outset when he had to rent all the necessary equipment.However, he wisely used his first profits to reinvest in the business by buying his own tools."Now, I can't envision working for anyone else. What I do provides more than enough for me, although it requires consistency and hard work," he told Namibian Sun.Business takes shapeDavid first began working in the Grootfontein area, dedicating days to cutting and collecting grass. Next, he expanded to areas along the Oshivelo-Tsumeb road and now operates in Ondangwa, where demand has continued to rise."This business is limitless," he said. "This year brought good rainfall, resulting in many livestock farmers having enough feed. But, in places like Opuwo, availability is scarce. When I deliver a truckload of grass there, livestock farmers purchase it immediately."Just last week, he sold 78 bundles in Opuwo in a single day, earning N$11 700. David prices each bundle at N$150, and his business can generate over N$100 000 in a successful month.“Our daily output can reach around 400 bundles. We work from 07:00 to 17:00 to cut the grass, and the following day we focus on advertising and delivering,” he explained.He markets his business by placing bundles of grass, each marked with his contact details, at strategic locations near local shops. He also promotes his services on social media and says customer calls "never stop".Despite his success, David still faces challenges. Maintaining his equipment is costly, with servicing required up to four times a month.David currently employs two permanent workers, with his siblings providing ongoing support as well.He encourages young people to take the initiative in pursuing opportunities. "No one will come knocking on your door with a business idea. You must wake up, think creatively about what can earn you money, and make your life easier," he advised.
