Uranium export blitz

Augetto Graig

Uranium exports jumped 438% month-on-month in August, the Chamber of Mines of Namibia quotes the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA)’s August trade bulletin in its monthly mining update newsletter for September. Namibia’s domestic exports reached N$9.33 billion in August, of which 72%, or N$6.69 billion, came from the 14 mineral-related categories in the export series, the chamber highlights. In July minerals contributed 62% to Namibia’s exports. Uranium was the main contributor to the overall increase, following the resumption of full production at the Husab

mine in July after its 22-day planned plant maintenance in June. According to the chamber, the higher output reached export markets in August. Gold exports fell 21% over the same period, while

diamonds rose 5%.
