Nust students should not pay for admission failures, IPC Mwashindange says
IPC member of Parliament Michael Mwashindange has called for urgent intervention over 20 Medical Laboratory Sciences students at the Namibia University of Science and Technology (Nust) facing possible deregistration. In a press statement issued yesterday, Mwashindange said it was unfair for students to be admitted, pay fees and spend two years studying, only to face deregistration over institutional capacity constraints. He claimed Nust had registered more than 120 students for the programme, despite the Health Professions Council of Namibia authorizing laboratory capacity for 50 students per cohort. Mwashindange said the burden of NUST’s admission and capacity decisions should not be shifted onto students. He called on the Ministry of Education and Nust to halt deregistrations pending an independent investigation and allow students who meet examination requirements to write. He also proposed alternative pathways, credit transfers and expanded practical placements. Mwashindange warned that legal action could follow if urgent measures are not taken.
