QBC steady after first loss to stay top
Quality Basketball Club (QBC) remain firmly in control of the Khomas Basketball Association (KBA) premier league after bouncing back from their first loss of the season with a convincing win last weekend.
After suffering a narrow 81-80 defeat to University of Namibia (Unam) Penguins the weekend before, QBC responded with a crucial 73-51 victory over Namibia University of Science and Technology (Nust) Gladiators at the Unam Gym Hall.
Neither team shot the lights out, but QBC compensated for their poor perimeter shooting by controlling the game through rebounding, interior scoring, extra possessions and depth.
The defending champions led for 33:54 of the 40 minutes and stretched their advantage to a game-high 22 points after Gladiators had briefly taken an early 12-6 lead in the opening quarter.
This was not a wire-to-wire blowout. Gladiators stayed within striking distance for much of the first half and even outscored QBC 18-15 in the second quarter, with QBC holding only a narrow 36-33 lead at halftime.
Third-quarter breakaway
However, QBC returned with greater intensity after the break, outscoring Gladiators 18-6 in the third quarter to open a decisive gap that proved insurmountable.
Their physical edge and sustained pressure gradually wore Gladiators down.
QBC dominated the boards 78-50, including a commanding 28-12 advantage in offensive rebounds, which translated into 22 second-chance points compared to just five for Gladiators.
Despite shooting only 32.2% from the field, QBC’s control of possessions gave them far more margin for error, allowing them to outscore Gladiators 48-30 in the paint.
This proved decisive in a game where both sides struggled from beyond the arc, with Gladiators shooting 4/31 (12.9%) from three-point range and QBC managing just 3/26 (11.5%).
QBC were also more composed offensively, finishing with 15 assists to Gladiators’ seven, despite both teams committing a high number of turnovers (25-26).
The defending champions’ ability to sustain possessions and convert around the rim was reflected in a superior points-per-possession return of 0.77 compared to Gladiators’ 0.51.
QBC’s bench also made a key impact, outscoring the Nust’s reserves 25-13, adding the depth that gradually drained the resistance from the opposition.
Gladiators struggle for efficiency
Gladiators showed early intent, taking a 12-6 lead and remaining competitive through the first half, but struggled to maintain efficiency on both ends. Poor shooting and an inability to secure defensive rebounds ultimately cost them.
Tatenda Bvocho (#6) recorded a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds, providing one of the few consistent two-way performances for Nust.
Captain Shilongo “Shox” Nekundi (#4) led all Gladiators scorers with 12 points on 5/10 shooting, while Prince Katalika (#9) added 10 points. Jonathan Amisa (#8) also came close to a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
However, these efforts were not enough as Gladiators failed to convert efficiently and struggled to close out possessions on the defensive glass.
Standout performers
QBC’s Player of the Match was Kevin Kazadi (#10), who delivered a dominant all-round performance.
He produced a massive double-double of 19 points and 22 rebounds, including nine offensive boards, while also contributing four assists, five steals and a game-best +24.
Captain Samuel “King of Plaza” Waendama (#8) added another double-double of 11 points and 15 rebounds (+21), helping ensure Gladiators had little margin for error after missed shots.
Yaurovandu Ndjavera (#11) provided a major boost off the bench with 15 points on 6/11 shooting, including 5/7 from two-point range and 2/2 from the free-throw line in under 20 minutes.
‘Subs made the difference’
Reflecting on the victory, QBC’s youngest player João Saponde (#14) said the team’s bench depth played a decisive role in the result.
“What made the difference in the match was our subs [who contributed 25 points], many of whom were unavailable in the last game. We’re now pushing because we don’t want to lose games anymore,” he said.
The result keeps QBC top of the standings, level on nine points with Unam Wolves, but ahead on head-to-head advantage following their 83-72 victory when the two sides met last month.
Unam Rebels occupy third place, tied on points with Penguins but holding a superior point differential (+8 to -17).

Third place remains closely contested on six points, where Nust Dodgers sit ahead of BAS Falcons despite the latter’s stronger point differential (+42 to +16), courtesy of Dodgers’ 58-50 head-to-head win earlier this month.

The first division is led by Unam Cadets on nine points, followed by Unam Pacers on eight and Unam Wolves II on seven.
