The Movie Guy and Comic Con
I officially attended my fourth Comic Con Cape Town, and this year may have been one of the best experiences yet.
I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this before, but one of the reasons I started The Movie Guy was so that I could attend events like Comic Con. I wanted to be at the centre of everything related to pop culture, and I’m incredibly grateful that I’ve been able to attend this particular convention for four years in a row.
This week, I just want to focus on Comic Con because there’s so much I want to say. First of all, I am absolutely exhausted. It feels as though I’ve run a marathon. I’m tired, but at the same time I feel fulfilled because I achieved everything I had planned for this Comic Con.
Also, I wanted to focus more on the people than on the event itself. I wanted to make friends; I wanted to speak to people about their Comic Con experiences and, most importantly, their love for films. I know not everyone gets to the cinema every week, so I used the opportunity to get people excited about what they can expect to see in theatres soon.
I had to make sure people understood that, just like Comic Con, cinemas offer something for everyone. I had so many great conversations with people, and normally I’m not someone who talks a lot. I simply felt comfortable because I was able to share something I’m passionate about with people who share that same passion.
On the first day of Comic Con, I made sure to attend as many panels as possible because I enjoy hearing people’s perspectives and I always want to learn more. I came across an incredible writer, Michael Ferguson, and his four-day writing panels inspired me to seriously work on my own writing again.
On Day 2, I focused on all the amazing guests. I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw Evanna Lynch. She portrayed Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter series. Christopher Sabat and Jason Liebrecht also hosted some of the funniest panels; they are well known for their anime dubbing roles. Lastly, I attended a panel with John Romita Jr., who is without a doubt one of my favourite comic book artists. His Spider-Man designs are striking.
On Day 3, I focused on my movie quizzes. Apparently, they were more difficult than people expected. I enjoyed it immensely and I think I made quite a few new friends through it. Day 4 was mostly the same, but I also took some time for myself and explored the incredible stalls. That was my Comic Con, so now let’s talk films.
Mortal Kombat II starts showing in cinemas today, and I’ll speak a bit more about it next week. Also showing today is The Sheep Detectives, starring Hugh Jackman, and it looks like a fun family film.
On 15 May, we have an interesting horror film called Obsession coming out. Lastly, on 22 May, we return to the galaxy far, far away with The Mandalorian and Grogu. Hopefully, you won’t need to watch the entire series to understand the film.
