The long-anticipated Voice of Namibia singing competition is set to take centre stage tonight at Pioneerspark Primary School (Parkies) in Windhoek. The competition, which aims to discover new talent and support winners on their musical journey, has two categories – one for adults and one for children.

The top three winners in each category will receive an undisclosed cash prize, along with a songwriting and video production sponsorship to help them release their own music after the competition, according to the contest's founder Alinda Lu’Mar.

“My heart’s wish is that Namibians will support Namibian talent,” she told tjiI, adding that the competition attracts high-calibre contestants each year.

She said viewers and participants can look forward to a spectacular show this year. Contestants will also receive prizes from event sponsors, including a vocal coaching voucher from The Singing Academy.

Sparkling line-up

The stage will light up with singing talent tonight, while also featuring performances by former contestants, including last year’s winner, Lize Labuschagne.

Last year’s Voice of Namibia Kidz champion, Salukazi Akwaake, will also grace the stage with a performance during the Kidz finale.

Following his win last year, Akwaake scooped top honours at the South African Championships of the Performing Arts in October, where she was crowned grand champion. This year’s line-up also features a dance performance by dancer and teacher Anri Brynard.

This year’s competition, which opened in July, received 60 entries. After reviewing them, 18 finalists from across the country were selected to vie for the top spots in both the adult and kids’ categories.

The competition will be judged by a panel of four experts, all active contributors to Namibia’s arts and entertainment industry.

Among the judges is Lomine Langley, who founded the Namibia Championships nine years ago and has since helped young talents compete at both the South African and World Championships of the Performing Arts. The panel also includes musician Claudine Nelson, who has performed with the Wika Orchestra for more than 12 years; Aletta Ackerman, an accomplished pianist and vocalist; and singer-songwriter and musician Sanet Lambrechts.
