Spielberg delivers one of his most heartfelt and thought-provoking films in years

Disclosure Day is very different from most alien invasion or science fiction films because it feels remarkably grounded. The first half plays out like a thriller, while the second feels almost like a fantasy drama. The science fiction elements are certainly present, but they are not really at the centre of the film’s themes. Thematically, it actually feels almost biblical.Steven Spielberg has always been one of my favourite filmmakers. He is the reason I developed such a strong love for films and the film industry. He has a way of making grand stories feel deeply personal. This film feels like his most personal work since E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Rather than focusing on a destructive alien invasion, it explores how humanity might genuinely react if we discovered that extraterrestrial life exists.It is more a story about humanity than about the aliens themselves, even though they play an important role.The film has a strong emotional core and kept me glued to my seat throughout. It is easy to become immersed in a story whose central theme is empathy rather than fear. The film is about who we are, not who the aliens are.Emily Blunt delivers an outstanding performance. I would even go so far as to say it is awards-worthy. Her emotional range is remarkable, particularly because her character moves between very different emotions within seconds. Josh O'Connor is also fantastic, while Colin Firth excels as the villain. The rest of the cast is equally phenomenal, including Colman Domingo and Eve Hewson.The film not only tells a compelling story, but also looks incredible. I wish I could have seen it in IMAX, as I believe that is the best way to experience it. Much of the film was shot on real locations rather than in a studio, which makes it feel even more grounded. There are not many large-scale action sequences, but the ones we do get look fantastic.The visual effects are mostly excellent, although a few CGI characters did not quite leap off the screen for me. I appreciate that Spielberg opted for a simple design for the aliens. It makes them feel more realistic in a sense and allows the audience to view them more easily as characters.It almost goes without saying that a film is likely to be good when John Williams and Steven Spielberg collaborate. Williams’ score once again serves as the emotional heart of the film. There is something almost magical about the way Spielberg’s direction and Williams’ music work together. They know how to tell a great story.Look, any film that opens with a wrestling scene automatically earns an A in my book. That said, I did have a few issues with the film, particularly with the pacing in the middle section and a handful of plot holes that I noticed. If I were to explain them, I would probably spoil the film for others. All I can say is that they are not significant enough to detract from how wonderfully impressive the film is overall.The film held my attention throughout, and by the end I wanted more. I felt connected to the world Spielberg created, and it made me think about what a real Disclosure Day might look like. If you enjoy Spielberg films and science fiction, you should definitely see it at the cinema.You can also finally go and watch Toy Story 5 today.I give Disclosure Day 4 out of 5 stars.
