Blending Afrobeat rhythms with gospel influences, up-and-coming Namibian musician Silas Musenga (25), who performs as SM Music, is carving out a distinctive sound.

In an interview with tjil this week, the young artist said his love for music began at an early age.

“Growing up in a faith-driven environment played a big role in shaping my musical journey,” Musenga said.

“I began singing in the choir, and later in high school, I started writing my own songs. That’s when I realised I wanted to take music seriously.”

Being surrounded by gospel music and church culture helped him build a strong spiritual foundation, which is reflected in his sound today.

Fresh beats

Musenga describes his music as Afro-gospel, blended with global influences, including Brazilian-inspired rhythms.

“I was drawn to Afro-gospel because it allows me to spread the message of God in a modern, vibrant and relatable way,” he said.

He cited Limoblaze and CalledOut Music as artists who have influenced his musical career.

“They showed me how powerful Afro-gospel can be and inspired me to find my own voice in the genre.”

The goal of his music is to spread faith, hope and positivity, he added.

“I want people to feel encouraged, uplifted and closer to God.”

As an emerging artist, Musenga has faced some challenges. “One of the biggest challenges has been introducing a new sound to the Namibian market,” he noted.

“Afro-gospel is still growing here, so it takes time for people to understand and connect with it. But through consistency and faith, I’ve seen positive responses.”

Looking ahead, Musenga said he wants to continue his spiritual growth and continue using his gift to serve Him.

“In my music career, my goal is to take Afro-gospel to a global level, represent Namibia on big stages and impact lives worldwide.”

He is currently working on a three-song EP, which he hopes to release in June.

“I’m excited for what’s coming next,” he shared.
