'Sica' dances her way into the spotlight
Young Namibian dancer goes viral
In Namibia, conversations about content creation are often met with scepticism and negativity.
Many still view social media content as mere “attention seeking” or “trying to be famous.”
But that perception is starting to change.
Social media is no longer just a virtual space for sharing interests. It has become a powerful platform where creativity meets opportunity. With the right sound, clip and algorithm, dreams can turn into reality.
One shining example is Jesicca Mpinge (21), known as ‘Sica’, a dancer and model whose creative dance routine recently captured global attention.
Sica choreographed a dance challenge to Ayra Starr and Rema’s hit song 'Who’s Dat Girl', which she shared on TikTok.
The video not only racked up impressive views and likes but also caught the eye of Nigerian award-winning musician Ayra Starr, who recreated the challenge and tagged Sica in her post.
Sica’s original video has garnered more than 84 000 views, while Ayra Starr’s recreation has amassed 3.6 million views on TikTok, with the caption: “Nooo this was hardddddd! Dc” and tagging Sica.
“That honestly made my year and marked a huge milestone in my dance journey,” Sica said recently.
Opening doors for Namibian creators
While her moment may not be as monumental as a “first moon landing,” it serves as a beacon of hope for local creators who often feel discouraged.
Social media has made it possible for Namibian artists to collaborate with idols, secure brand deals, and showcase their talents to the world – all with a camera, dedication and a single click of “upload”.
“After this big recognition, I plan on continuing to post TikToks without limiting myself to the local space,” Sica said.
“This way I’ll build an international crowd and increase my number of viewers outside the country, bringing that recognition back to contribute to the growth of the Namibian dance industry.”
Social media is proving that where talents meet, the future truly brightens.
