Record-breaking crowds, vibrant performances and a surge in youth entrepreneurship marked the 2025 edition of Namibia's premier cultural celebration at Sam Nujoma Stadium.
Under a crisp winter sky at the Sam Nujoma Stadium, the 2025 edition of the PstBet Windhoek Annual Cultural Festival concluded last weekend with resounding success, drawing crowds from across Namibia and beyond. Now in its latest and arguably most impactful iteration, the festival offered a powerful blend of heritage, innovation and national pride.
Speaking to tjil, Sylvester Shapwa, managing director of the PstBet Windhoek Annual Cultural Festival and the festival’s chief architect, reflected on the weekend-long celebration with evident pride. “This year was about more than just entertainment – it was about creating space for culture to evolve while anchoring ourselves in our roots,” he said.
A multi-day showcase of Namibian culture
Each day of the festival brought a unique rhythm, combining tradition with forward-looking creativity.
The festival opened with a vibrant ceremony featuring traditional dance troupes, live music and speeches from cultural leaders. The crescendo of the evening was a dazzling fireworks display that painted the Katutura sky, signalling the beginning of a weekend steeped in cultural celebration.
On day two, focus shifted toward economic empowerment through exhibitions of local artisans, SMEs and food vendors. Cultural fashion took centre stage as models showcased garments representing Namibia’s diverse ethnic groups. The evening performances saw musicians fuse traditional rhythms with modern beats, blurring the line between the past and the present.
Overall, the weekend was a celebration of community engagement. Youth talent shows, storytelling corners and culinary tastings drew crowds of all ages. A dance competition featuring some of Namibia’s most dynamic performers underscored the weekend's theme of participation and cultural pride.
Record-breaking attendance
According to Shapwa, this year’s event exceeded expectations in both turnout and participation. “We saw a surge in SME exhibitors and a noticeable rise in youth-led enterprises,” he noted. The festival attracted not only Namibian visitors but also regional guests from Angola, Botswana and South Africa, a testament to its growing regional appeal.
Among the unexpected highlights were new digital and interactive exhibits. “We incorporated virtual participation and online showcases for those who couldn’t attend physically,” Shapwa explained. “It’s an indication of where we’re headed; culture doesn’t have to be confined by space.”

The 2025 edition bore the theme 'Preserving Heritage, Embracing Innovation', a message that permeated the festival’s programming. Traditional folktales were reimagined on stage with digital backdrops, while artisans blended ancestral techniques with modern design. The result was an event that honoured the past while actively shaping the cultural future.
“The theme was not just a slogan. It was a directive,” said Shapwa. “We wanted every participant to walk away understanding that innovation can and should emerge from heritage.”
