Patricia Coetzee crowned Voice of Namibia 2025 champion

Season eight of Voice of Namibia concluded last Saturday, with Patricia Coetzee from Walvis Bay rising above the competition to claim the title.

The annual singing contest saw 15 talented vocalists compete for the top spot, but Coetzee stood out, captivating judges with her powerful voice and commanding stage presence.

In a recent interview, Coetzee said her victory was deeply rooted in faith. She had entered Voice of Namibia three times: the first time she missed the Top 10, the second time she soared to second place, and on her third attempt, she finally triumphed as Voice of Namibia 2025.

“This year I prayed that God would let me win. I said, 'God, whatever happens, these are your vocal cords; do what you need to do,'" she said.

At the end of the night, when the MC announced her as the winner, Coetzee knew that God had come through for her.

“This is my testimony that God’s timing is perfect and that your time will come when it is supposed to. This win made my faith and trust in the Lord even stronger,” she said.

Coetzee admitted that this year’s competition was not easy, and as the night progressed, her admiration for her fellow contestants gave way to fear as she began comparing herself.

“It’s a little scary because you start to compare yourself to the rest, but I didn’t doubt myself, as I was prepared to give it my all,” said Coetzee.

As the finals drew to a close, a dramatic tie for first place meant she had to perform again. She went backstage, prayed once more, and delivered the performance of her life.

“I've never given my all in a song the way I gave my all in that moment. God really showed me then and there what I am truly capable of," she said.

In that moment, she discovered a new level of her own voice.

Multi-skilled performer

Coetzee is not only a singer but also a TV presenter. She said that being a presenter teaches you how to connect with an audience you cannot see, and while she is still perfecting that skill, she believes she improves with each episode. Her experience as a presenter also gave her the confidence she needed to connect with a live audience.

According to her vocal trainer, Jo-Ann Strauss, Coetzee had something special from the moment she first heard her voice.

Strauss said that during the final stage of training, they took extra care to protect her throat, rehearsing full-strength only once and then practising softly to keep her voice healthy and avoid fatigue.

“There was a lot of up and down during the song selection, but we chose the songs that showcased her as an artist and that made her strong,” said Strauss.

She added that it’s all about selecting what works best for your voice type and timbre, noting that Coetzee has a voice like an angel – very pure.

Coetzee has competed in numerous contests, including Talent Namibia and the Namibian Championships, where she has won several gold medals. She also represented Namibia at the World Championships in Los Angeles, an experience that contributed significantly to her growth as an artist.

“I would love to take some credit, but I can’t. It’s all her,” Strauss said.

As part of her Voice of Namibia winnings, Coetzee will release an international recording. A song is currently being written and produced for her by Rivers & Bridges Music, a record label in North Carolina, USA, which serves as the official international label for Voice of Namibia winners.
