Oviritje star marks comeback with reflective story of hope, struggle and homecoming
After a hiatus from the music scene, Oviritje artist Chicco DeeBok Murema is making a comeback with his new single, ‘Itavera’, accompanied by a music video that was released on Tuesday, 9 September.
In an interview with tjil, Chicco shared that the song tells the story of a young man who leaves home in pursuit of a better life for himself and his family, only to face unforeseen hardships, ultimately choosing to return home.
Chicco, a Namibia Annual Awards (NAMAs) 2017 nominee, first entered the music industry in 2008 as part of the Epango raMongua konsert group alongside his brothers Diouf and Okocha Murema. Together, they released a series of albums between 2008 and 2016, establishing themselves as notable voices in the Oviritje genre.
In 2016, Chicco embarked on a solo journey with the release of his debut album, ‘Hina Story Na Karive’, which translates to “I don’t have an issue with anyone.” The album earned him a nomination at the 2017 NAMAs in the Oviritje category. He followed up with ‘Crazy Last Born’ in 2017 and ‘Beautiful Nonsense’ in 2018, after which he stepped back from full-length projects.
Latest milestone
Between 2021 and now, he began releasing individual singles, gradually reintroducing himself to the industry.
‘Itavera’ marks the latest milestone in his comeback, accompanied by a music video, a deliberate choice reflecting his belief that visual storytelling is often overlooked in Oviritje music.
He shared his plans for the year: “I am working on an album I am set to release early next year, but for now the focus is on churning out visuals,” he said.
“As part of my comeback mission, I am intentional about complementing my songs with music videos, which is something the Oviritje genre often lacks.”
