New Ongoma Music Awards to spotlight local artists

The creative minds behind the newly launched Ongoma Music Awards described it as a proudly Namibian initiative created to celebrate, recognise and promote local musical talent, with a strong focus on cultural identity and traditional expressions.

Founder Ndawana Ndume told tjil: "The awards were inspired by the need to create a platform that not only honours excellence in music but also preserves and elevates Namibia's rich cultural heritage through sound."

The inaugural awards are set to take place on 29 August at Ekamuti Lodge in Ondangwa.

The initiative focuses primarily on emerging musicians, giving them their first taste of recognition and industry exposure, Ndume said.

“Ongoma aims to serve as a stepping stone for new artists, allowing them to build confidence, recognition and professional credibility before eventually progressing to larger national platforms such as the NAMAs."

Ndume said the aim is to create a lasting impact by motivating artists, building confidence and opening doors within the industry.

He said recognition plays a crucial role in an artist's growth and that Ongoma aims to inspire artists to take their craft more seriously and strive for excellence.

On nominations, Ndume said: "Artists will be nominated through a public and industry-driven process where fans and stakeholders can submit nominations." Once nominations are finalised, a panel of qualified judges will review entries based on clear criteria.

Judging criteria include musical quality and originality, cultural relevance and authenticity, and production value.

Sound and society

Salimi Gerhard, spokesperson for the Ongoma Music Awards, said: "The award categories were carefully developed through research, industry consultations, and a deep understanding of Namibia's evolving music landscape."

She said the awards will create a space for both mainstream and emerging genres, ensuring that different sounds, cultures and regions are represented, including categories addressing pressing social issues.

“These categories recognise the powerful role music plays in addressing societal issues, particularly gender-based violence, which remains a critical concern in our communities."

She underlined that the Ongoma Music Awards "are not just about a single night of recognition; they are about creating lasting impact within the industry and the community".

Gerhard said the awards aim to introduce artist development programmes, workshops and networking platforms to help artists grow both creatively and professionally.

“We also want to create ongoing conversations around important social issues, including gender-based violence, using music as a tool for awareness and advocacy,"" she noted.
