Namibia Film Preservation Project kicks off
First comprehensive catalogue of Namibian films
The Museums Association of Namibia (MAN), in partnership with the National Archives of Namibia and the Namibia Film Commission, has launched the Namibia Film Preservation Project.
The project, supported by the Carl Schlettwein Stiftung in Basel, Switzerland, seeks to preserve films that document Namibia’s liberation struggle, nation-building, solidarity against apartheid, and cultural, social and artistic expression since independence.
As part of the effort, two trainee cataloguers are working with experts to compile the first comprehensive catalogue of Namibian films.
Filmmakers across the country are invited to help identify and document films held in private and institutional collections, particularly those still stored on tape or film, which are most at risk of being lost.
The catalogue will form the foundation for future preservation and digitisation projects. Filmmakers and film owners are encouraged to complete a short survey about productions made from 1980 to the present.
By contributing, participants will help preserve Namibia’s collective memory and ensure that the nation’s stories remain accessible for future generations.
