Strauss Lunyangwe, better known by his stage name Mr. Makoya, is proving that good music has no expiration date. The veteran Namibian artist has just released the music video for ‘Soweto Remix,’ a track featuring Mabuzza and Tuko, lifted from his 2022 album ‘Son of The Soil.’

In an interview with tjil, Mr. Makoya spoke candidly about adapting to the ever-evolving music industry, emphasizing the crucial role visuals play in music promotion today. “Music videos are important in promoting music these days. Often, the only songs that get attention are the ones complemented with visuals, hence I am still dropping music videos from my 2022 album,” he said.

A Tribute to Katutura and Kwaito

The collaboration with Mabuzza and Tuko is more than just a musical alliance—it is a celebration of Katutura’s vibrant neighborhoods and a nod to the once-dominant Kwaito genre, which has since faded from mainstream popularity in Namibia. “We are from Katutura, and we love Kwaito. Mabuzza and Tuko just made sense for this collaboration because they are from hoods in Katutura, and they also love Kwaito just as much as I do,” Mr. Makoya shared.

The Man Behind the Lens

Mr. Makoya’s involvement in his projects extends beyond music. As a media and production practitioner, he took on multiple roles in the making of the ‘Soweto Remix’ music video, directing and conceptualizing the visual narrative while also handling cinematography and editing.

“I have been in the music industry for quite some time, and a while back, I enrolled in a video editing course at FNCC. It has helped me immensely in my career because I can now handle creative tasks myself under my own production company, TS Media,” he revealed.

The ‘Soweto Remix’ music video was directed and conceptualized by Mr. Makoya, who also served as the cinematographer and editor. Drone footage was provided by Paulo Coelho. The song itself was produced by DJ Dozza, adding his signature touch to the track’s sonic landscape.

With over two decades in the industry—including his early days as a member of the acclaimed Matongo Family—Mr. Makoya continues to evolve, blending nostalgia with modern storytelling.
