DELICATE THORNS: Unveiling life's dualities at BELLHAUS Atelier and Galerie

BELLHAUS Atelier and Galerie is pleased to announce the opening of DELICATE THORNS, a compelling dual exhibition featuring the evocative works of ceramicist Jacqui van Vuuren and photographer Chris Johnston. This highly anticipated exhibition will run from 18 July to 10 August 2024, marking the first collaborative showcase of these long-time friends since 2018.

According to a press release shared by BELLHAUS Atelier and Galerie, DELICATE THORNS explores the intriguing juxtaposition between two distinct artistic approaches, offering unique perspectives on existence. “Van Vuuren's work reflects refined, gentle energy through her intricate ceramic pieces, while Johnston’s photography embodies a sharp, unapologetic perspective, much like the thorn.”

Inspired by her recent travels to the Netherlands and the UK, van Vuuren’s collection features functional ceramic pieces influenced by botanical gardens, antiques, and Delft porcelain. Her creations, including tea pots, bowls, and jugs, exhibit a delicate palette and abstract proportions. The unpredictability of the kiln adds an element of fragility, reinforcing the delicate nature of her work. Additionally, she introduces a series of orchid-inspired jewelry pieces, symbolizing the fleeting beauty of life.

Johnston’s photography confronts viewers with controversial and raw imagery, compelling them to face uncomfortable truths. His pieces, such as "Abducted by Aliens" and "iPad," forces the viewer to pause, ponder and provokes strong emotional responses. Johnston meticulously crafts each image, ensuring they convey the intended impact, even if it means redoing his work multiple times.

BELLHAUS Atelier and Galerie invites viewers to explore the delicate and thorny aspects of life through this exhibition. Join us in celebrating the harmonious yet contrasting worlds of Jacqui van Vuuren and Chris Johnston, and reflect on how these dualities mirror our own existence.

DELICATE THORNS opens at BELLHAUS Atelier and Galerie on Thursday, 18 July at 18:00 for 18:30 and runs until 10 August 2024.
