Colman Domingo roars into 'Wicked: For Good' as the beloved Cowardly Lion
Actor Colman Domingo has joined the cast of 'Wicked: For Good', taking on the role of the Cowardly Lion in the upcoming sequel to 2024’s hit musical film 'Wicked'.
The news was confirmed through a playful Instagram post shared by the movie’s Instagram page on Monday, where the Oscar-nominated actor appeared surrounded by lion plush toys before signing off with the words, “See you in Oz”.
The announcement followed days of online speculation after director Jon M. Chu hinted that a major Hollywood star would voice the character.
Domingo joins a star-studded cast that includes Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda, along with Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Ethan Slater and Bowen Yang.
In ‘Wicked: For Good’, the worlds of 'The Wizard of Oz' and 'Wicked' finally come together. The Cowardly Lion, who appeared briefly as a cub in the first film, returns as a fully grown character in the sequel.
In the story, the cub was once rescued by Elphaba and Fiyero after being caged for experimentation. The trailer has also teased Dorothy’s arrival in Oz, and the Lion appears alongside the Scarecrow and Tin Man on their journey down the Yellow Brick Road.
Deeper look
Chu described Domingo’s involvement as a special addition that will excite fans when he appears on screen.
Domingo, known for his performances in 'Rustin', 'Euphoria' and 'The Colour Purple', adds another standout credit to his career.
The actor has been nominated twice for an Academy Award, has an Emmy win to his name and was recognised by 'Time' magazine in 2024 as one of the 100 most influential people in the world.
'Wicked: For Good' continues the story of Elphaba and Glinda after their emotional split, exploring how their choices shape the future of Oz. The first instalment was a major success, earning a total of ten Oscar nominations and winning two for costume and production design.
The sequel was filmed in the United Kingdom at Sky Studios Elstree and wrapped earlier this year after delays caused by the Hollywood actors’ strike.
Fans can expect new characters, returning favourites and a deeper look into Oz when 'Wicked: For Good' hits the cinemas on 21 November.
