British Love Island ‘bombshell' named after Namibia stuns locals

Namibia Rosa Olpherts (25), a customer service officer from Leeds, England, sparked a wave of curiosity on Namibian social media after entering the show's 13th season, with many asking how a British reality star came to be named after Namibia.

Olpherts, who has Pakistani and Caribbean heritage, has become a talking point on local social media after clips of her Love Island debut began circulating online.

Many expressed surprise and curiosity over her unusual first name, with some jokingly welcoming her as an "honorary Namibian", while others speculated about whether she had any family or personal connection to Namibia.

In an exclusive interview with tjil, the TV star shared the story behind her name, explaining that her parents knew there was a country in Africa called Namibia.

“The reason behind my name is that my mum was watching a documentary based on Namibia, and she decided that she liked it for a name," Olpherts told tjil.

Olpherts said she has always known she was named after the African country, adding that her parents made sure she understood the significance from a young age.

Responding to Namibians' surprise and excitement after learning about her name, Olpherts said: "It's such an amazing feeling. I’ve met a lot of people from different African countries who are shocked when I introduce myself, but I’ve never met anyone from Namibia."

She added that she was thrilled to learn people in Namibia now know who she is.

Now aware of the attention she has drawn in Namibia, Olpherts said she is keen to visit.

“Yes, 100%. I’ve always wanted to visit from an early age, as I feel it’s only right to visit the country I’m named after, and it looks like such a beautiful country. I’d love to see Sandwich Harbour in person."

Being on Love Island

Olpherts said she entered the villa with few expectations, but was struck by how small it is compared with how it appears on screen.

"You can sit at the mini fire pit and hear conversations across the garden, which I thought was mad. I also didn’t realise how many little cameras were in the villa, but I adapted quite quickly to them," Olpherts said.

Olpherts said the show brought a whirlwind of emotions, made harder by being cut off from family and close friends.

"It was hard at times, especially because I couldn’t speak to my family or close friends, but I had my girls in there, which made me feel better about the situation. It is a lot to process, especially because of the environment."

She said she has no regrets and stayed true to herself, ending things with Sam once she realised there was no romantic connection.

"I could’ve led him on, but that’s just not who I am as a person," she said, referring to her experience of being coupled with Sam during the show.

Olpherts believes her real personality came through on camera, particularly in some of the one-liners she delivered during the show. However, she said her closeness to her family – she speaks to two of her sisters every day – never made it to screen.

"When it comes to my personal life, this couldn’t be shown obviously, but I'm really close to two of my big sisters. I literally speak to them every day, so that was a bit hard."
