Willias Nghitotelwa, popularly known as Mapuzza (18), and Freddy Kandjala, who goes by the stage name Baby Boi Jr (18), are making waves on the Namibian music scene. After a few initial releases, their breakthrough came with the track 'Mr Driver', which has now surpassed 300 000 views on YouTube, cementing their status as a musical force to be reckoned with. Describing the song, the duo said it was about telling a story that resonates with fans.“We made sure the supporters wanted to hear what happens next, and that’s how we made them fall in love with the whole track,” Baby Boi Jr explained, noting the song’s humorous twist.Mapuzza and Baby Boi Jr said their hometown of Walvis Bay gave 'Mr Driver' strong early support, while fans from neighbouring towns such as Arandis also helped the track gain attention.“Most of the supporters actually thought we were from Arandis, but a huge thanks to all the other towns that took part in boosting and supporting the song,” they added.Hard work pays offMapuzza and Baby Boi Jr attribute the song’s success to a strong marketing strategy and consistent promotion. “When the song surpassed 200k views, that is when I knew this was an amazing achievement for the team and me. Hopefully we’ll give the nation more hits," Baby Boi Jr said.He added that the strategy included uploading promotional videos and leaning on the power of social media to help reach a wider audience and boost the streaming numbers. "We made as many promotional videos as we could, then shared them with the public via different platforms that easily capture the youth’s attention – platforms like TikTok, Instagram and YouTube. Trust me, we didn’t rest!”Baby Boi Jr highlighted the effort that went into ensuring the song reached the right audience, including the first promotional video, which gained 120 000 views in just 24 hours, confirming to them that 'Mr Driver' was destined to make an impact.Mapuzza and Baby Boi Jr began producing music together in grade nine and have known each other since third grade. The duo remains committed to creating more music and contributing to Namibia’s growing music scene.Fresh approach Musician Doglas Tuhafeni, who is also featured on 'Mr Driver', has, meanwhile, unveiled another new track, titled 'Wozala Mandela', featuring Mapuzza and Baby Boi Jr. He described the release as a next-level collaboration among Namibian talents.Tuhafeni explained that, while maintaining his signature storytelling style, he also experimented with a fresh approach to the song’s production.“With my new release, I kept the same strategy of storytelling, because I want my music to have a meaning when people listen. I’ve been listening to a lot of local artists in Namibia to try and capture different sounds. As an underground or upcoming artist, it’s always best to look up to others making it work in the industry,” he explained.
