Art for art's sake

MICHAEL KAYUNDE
Graphic designer, illustrator and all-round creative Wilhelm Brockerhoff - also affectionately known as Mr ABC - chats to tjil about his first solo art exhibition.

Themed ‘Art for Art’s Sake’, the exhibition consists of a collection of work spanning 10 years. The exhibition opened on Friday, 16 September, and will conclude today at The Brewers Market in Windhoek.

In an interview, Brockerhoff said most of the pieces in this exhibition were done on found material like wooden boards and planks.

“The inspiration for this exhibition comes from having a collection of works that do not really have a central theme or concept as the inspiration for each came from creating something from nothing or adding value to discarded consumer goods at different times and stages of this period,” he said.

Lessons and growth

On the response to the exhibition, the creative shared that he did not have any set expectations, but rather focused on exposing his work to the masses.

“The response has been phenomenal; I really appreciate everyone who has been supporting me by coming through to check out and purchase some of the artworks,” he said.

With his first solo exhibition closing today, Brockerhoff shared that he has taken many lessons from the experience and looks forward to contributing to the growth of the arts industry in Namibia.

“The end goal is to create a platform and facility where other creatives can also showcase their work.

“Having been in this industry for years, I am aware that the challenge for many creatives in Namibia comes when wanting to sell their work. I feel like there is no solid platform for creatives to exhibit,” he said.
