For Vaughn Ahrens, music is not about fame or trends – it is about connection. From the quiet of a farm outside Windhoek to stages across Southern Africa, his greatest goal remains simple: to make people feel something.Although he is now one of Namibia’s best-known contemporary musicians and has already performed internationally, he remains naturally grounded. When the stage lights go out and the guitar is put down, he does not return to the rush of the music industry but to the simplicity of nature.“I’m someone who really enjoys nature. I love experiencing the silence on our farm outside Windhoek, discovering new places in Southern Africa and spending time with family and friends. Those moments help me stay creative.”Music became part of his life at a young age, but the moment he realised that his songs could move people emotionally, everything changed.“From there, it no longer felt like a hobby, but like a calling.”That calling has taken him from small stages in Walvis Bay to international festivals. Yet he says the biggest surprise is that he still gets to do what he loves every day.Ahrens describes his sound as honest, melody-driven and deeply influenced by the people, landscapes and cultures of Southern Africa. Rather than following the latest musical trends, he focuses on writing songs that feel authentic and stay with listeners long after they have finished listening.“I don’t try to adapt to trends; I’d rather make music that feels authentic.”Collecting inspirationTravel also plays a major role in his creative process. Every town, culture and conversation, he says, leaves something behind that eventually becomes part of his music.For Ahrens, a song rarely begins with a complete idea. It usually starts with a feeling, a guitar line or a melody that suddenly comes to him. The lyrics follow later, when the emotion begins to develop into a story. It is precisely the songs that emerge from meaningful life experiences that resonate most deeply with him.Although he spends a great deal of time in the studio, he feels most at home on stage.“In the studio, you chase perfection. On stage, it’s about connection.”He believes no two performances are ever the same, because every audience brings its own energy. His international performances have also shown him that music can connect people, regardless of language or borders.In an industry where social media and trends are constantly changing, Ahrens deliberately remains true to himself.“I don’t change my identity to fit in with trends. I believe people remember honest music for much longer than music that is simply made for the moment.”His advice to young artists is simple: don’t compare yourself to others, build your own voice and be patient, because success is built through small, consistent steps.For new listeners, he recommends In the Clear, Thorn in My Side and Dance of Destiny as the best introduction to his music. He dreams of touring internationally even more and would one day love to collaborate with Ben Howard – an artist who inspires him through his simplicity and emotional honesty.For Vaughn Ahrens, however, success is not measured by awards or sold-out shows, but by the impact his music has on people.“I hope people remember that I have always tried to make sincere music. If someone feels something, finds courage or can simply connect with themselves for a few minutes after one of my songs, then the music has achieved its purpose.”
