Solange Torres drops Wez My RaZul

Namibian hip-hop artist, DJ, producer and brand promoter Solange Torres has dropped her new track, Wez My RaZul, complete with a slick music video shot by Spectrum Media.

Torres told tjil this week that the title translates to "Where is my RaZul?", before spilling the story behind the track.

“The song originally came about in 2023 when I was looking to do something with a local brand, but unfortunately that collaboration never materialised. I was disappointed by that and ended up leaving the song untouched for a few years,” she said.

But Torres eventually realised she owed it to herself to finish what she'd started, regardless of how the original plan panned out.

She describes the song as being built around "the idea of a fictional heist, good times, bottles, money, power and taking matters into your own hands."

Trusting her instincts

The music video brings that concept to life through a cinematic storyline, following Torres as she carves out her own path after being told no.

The song’s core message, she said, "is about being rejected or told no and deciding that you’re still going to find a way forward. Sometimes the door doesn’t open, so you have to build your own entrance".

On how her collaboration with Azmo Nawe and Reezzy came together, Torres said: "I think what made the collaboration special was that we all brought something very different to the table. Azmo isn't traditionally known as a hip-hop artist, but he trusted the process and was willing to experiment and have fun with it."

She described Reezzy as instrumental in shaping the sound, calling him "one of the most respected hip-hop producers in Namibia" and crediting him for "some pushing and encouragement... throughout the process".

Torres personally directed, creative-directed and styled the music video. Explaining her decision to take full creative control, she said it can sometimes be difficult in the industry to get others to immediately see the vision she has in her head.

“I’ve learned that if there’s something I believe strongly enough in, I have to be willing to push through and figure it out myself,” she said.

She explained that taking creative control wasn't about believing she was the only person capable of executing her ideas, but rather about trusting her instincts and being intentional about the outcome she envisioned.

Carrying the weight

Reflecting on the experience of shooting the video alongside Spectrum Media, Torres described it as an emotional rollercoaster.

“I remember going home after the first day on set and literally breaking down and crying. It was a lot to take in because this wasn’t just another shoot for me,” she said.

She explained that she was carrying the entire vision, the pressure of executing it, and the responsibility of ensuring that what she had imagined translated successfully on camera.

Torres said Wez My RaZul is a lead-in to a larger project, though she has not confirmed whether it will be an album.

“I’m definitely looking forward to a remix of Wez My RaZul, so people should stay tuned for that. I’m also looking forward to collaborating with more hip-hop artists locally, across Africa and eventually internationally,” Torres said.
