Namibian cello prodigy prepares to take the spotlight
Namibian musical prodigy Juliette Nel (13) is preparing to showcase her talent at the Hubert van der Spuy National Music Competition, which will take place from 22 to 26 September in Stellenbosch, South Africa.
The Swakopmund-based teenager will take part in the prestigious competition, organised annually by the Tygerberg Branch of the South African Society of Music Teachers (SASMT) in collaboration with Stellenbosch University’s department of music. The event continues to provide a platform for promising young performers.
Inspired by the vision of Professor Hubert van der Spuy, former chairperson of the SASMT, the competition stands as a lasting tribute to his lifelong dedication to nurturing young musical talent.
Van der Spuy continues to support the competition through the sponsorship of its annual first prize, while the competition's patron, Dr Marlene le Roux, further strengthens its commitment to championing the next generation of young musicians across the region.
Now in its 37th year, the competition has become a launchpad for exceptional artists aged 13 and younger, with many former participants going on to build distinguished international careers as concert performers, educators and adjudicators.
Speaking on the standard of entries, SASMT chairperson Hilda Boonzaaier praised the dedication of participants and teachers.
“It was a huge privilege to listen to the excellent work entered by learners and teachers. We also acknowledge the precious role of everyone giving support to our young musicians. Keep up the good work! We are excited to experience your progress and hear your performances in September,” Boonzaaier said.
With anticipation building for this year's competition, the Namibian spotlight now turns firmly to Nel, the only finalist from Namibia.
Nel's selection attests to her dedication, discipline and musical growth as she prepares to carry national pride onto the international stage and represent the country among Southern Africa's most promising young musicians.
