In Theatres This September

We need to get ourselves ready to spend a lot of time at the cinema this September.

There are exactly 18 films being released in theatres this month. Coyote vs Acme has made the list again because its release date has been postponed once again. Let’s take a look at a few of these films.

4 September

Landmine

Landmine has already made quite a splash even before it begins showing in theatres. It won several awards at the Silwerskermtoekennings, including Best Feature Film. I think that is enough reason to go watch it.

Fall 2

If you are afraid of heights, you might want to skip this one. This time, two climbers find themselves thousands of feet above the ground, trapped on Thailand’s Mount Kwan.

Also released on this day is a comedy film, Idiots. By Any Means is another film coming out on the same day, and it stars Mark Wahlberg and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.

11 September

Don’t Look Back in Anger

The documentary follows Liam and Noel Gallagher during their Oasis Live ’25 reunion tour, giving audiences access to behind-the-scenes and stage footage, as well as the brothers’ first joint interviews in more than 20 years.

Practical Magic 2

I did not expect us to get another Practical Magic film. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman return as Sally and Gillian Owens, with the sequel bringing the Owens family back together as they face a new dangerous curse.

Runner, starring Alan Ritchson and Owen Wilson, also comes out on this day. The Fix, starring Liam Neeson, also makes its debut on the day.

18 September

Silas and the Polar Bear on Table Mountain

This family film is more than I expected, so get ready to shed a few tears. It seamlessly blends fantasy with the real world, and the practical effects make me appreciate local filmmakers even more. I am just excited that we can watch two Afrikaans films in theatres this month.

Echoes of Omusati

It tells the story of a woman who was born in Zambia and whose search for her father leads her to the Omusati region, years after the realities of the liberation struggle forced many Namibians into exile.

The Uprising, starring Andrew Garfield, also makes its debut on 18 September. Sacrifice, starring Chris Evans, Anya Taylor-Joy and Salma Hayek, also comes out on the same day, as does Coyote vs Acme.

25 September

Resident Evil

Resident Evil is described as a reboot that takes more inspiration from the games. Austin Abrams stars in the lead role, and director Zach Cregger has created an entirely new story that follows a medical courier who finds himself caught in a terrifying outbreak.

Forgotten Island

I am completely in favour of original animated films, and the animation in the film looks incredible. It follows two best friends, Jo and Raissa, who are transported through a mysterious portal to the fantastical island of Nakali.

Marvel is also back with Avengers: Endgame Encore, which is basically the same film with additional scenes. We also get Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom on this day, as well as Heart of the Beast, starring Brad Pitt.
