While 2025 was a defining year, this year is all about intentional growth and expansion for fashion designer and creative director Melisa Poulton, as House of Poulton eyes the European market. In an interview with tjil, Poulton shared that the brand is entering a phase of refinement and strategic positioning as a luxury export brand, shortly after becoming the first Namibian brand to showcase at Paris Fashion Week in October last year. She is strengthening her identity as the “Queen of Ruffles”, and evolving silhouettes while expanding into curated international markets.

Giving us a sneak peek into what this looks like practically, she shared plans to develop more structured capsule collections and open a rental boutique.

House of Poulton also plans to go into mass production, aiming to provide luxury Namibian products to international boutiques. Poulton added that fashion film is among her interests as a global storytelling tool which she will employ to promote "Namibia as a luxury visual narrative and not just a location and create immersive fashion storytelling projects rooted in Namibian landscapes".

Among her priorities are bridging fashion, lifestyle and tourism. She revealed that potential collaborations on the horizon include wine estates, with the aim to create experiential fashion moments rather than traditional runway shows.”

Economic role

The growth of Namibia’s fashion industry is exciting, she said, pointing out that “designers are becoming more intentional, confident and business-minded".

She added that the industry needs structure and sustainability, adding that “stronger retail systems, export support, manufacturing development, and long-term investment in fashion as an economic contributor, and not just a creative outlet" are vital.

"Namibia has talent. What we need now is infrastructure and belief. If we nurture that, the next decade could redefine how the world sees Namibian fashion.” Poulton shared passionately that beyond building a brand, she is committed to building a legacy that opens doors for the next generation of Namibian designers.

Global stage

Presenting House of Poulton at Paris Fashion Week was the highlight of 2025 for Poulton, in what she calls a defining year for her brand.

“Showcasing a Namibian luxury brand on that platform was both emotional and affirming,” she said, stating that representation was a key priority for her even beyond the runway.

“Beyond the show itself, seeing the international response to our craftsmanship, our ruffles, and our storytelling through fashion and Namibian landscapes was incredibly validating.”

She extended her gratitude to partners who made the experience memorable, adding that all played a role, and that made her feel like Namibia was walking the runway with her.

“I am deeply grateful to the Arts Council of Namibia, FlyNamibia, Namibia Tourism Board, O&L Leisure, Kolmanskuppe Lüderitz, MTC Windhoek Fashion Week, 99FM, and Ogilvy Namibia."
