#JustIn: Only 5 veggies on 'import green list'
This month, Namibia's borders will only be open for the import of carrots, pumpkin, watermelon, cantaloupe and spinach. Because there are enough of the controlled vegetable species available locally, the Namibian Agricultural Board (NAB) earlier this week closed the borders for the import of 11 vegetable and fruit species, which include English cucumber, butternut squash, onions and cabbage. Vegetables such as beetroot, jam tomatoes, sweet potatoes and lettuce will be able to be imported on a pro-rata basis. This is in terms of the Agronomic Industry Act as well as the market share promotion scheme, the aim of which is to first utilise the available local production before imports are allowed.
